Campbell, Hannah (2020) Welcome to the mainstage of the representation of RuPaul’s Drag Race and the empowering nature that it offers to LGBTQ+ communities and the world. (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

This dissertation will discuss the television show RuPaul’s Drag Race (RPDR) and the aspects which allow it to be a worldwide success. The three main categories that I will focus on will be: how the show conforms to the reality television genre, the positive effect that RuPaul has imprinted on the world and the impact of the fandom that surrounds the show.
I found that even though RPDR belongs to the reality television genre, the show includes many more elements that allow it to fit into multiple categories. Comparing to other reality shows, I prove how RPDR is unique and influential to audiences. I delve into the history behind drag queen phenomenon RuPaul and will learn that he is an all-around talented celebrity and is living proof that through hard work and determination you can achieve your goals. I found that the fans of RPDR play a major part in the success of the show and how their opinions are important and valued. The fans determine changes and developments in RPDR because of the popularity that RuPaul wants to execute.
I conclude by explaining how each element is crucial to RuPaul’s Drag Race and the empowerment that it offers to many individuals that are a part of the LGBTQ+ community. It also supports people from around the world, who need to find an escape and be reminded to be and love themselves.
