Poulton, Harrison (2020) To what extent can Edgar Wright be considered a new type of auteur within the contemporary transmedia age?. (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
This study discusses to what extent Edgar Wright can be considered a new type of auteur within the contemporary transmedia age. Wright has become a leading director within British cinema and is in the process of converging towards mainstream Hollywood. After identifying Sarris’ (1962) traditional criteria for auteurship, this is juxtaposed to a selection of Wright’s filmography through the process of textual analysis. Updated academic material on auteur theory such as Watson’s Cinematic Authorship and the Film Auteur (2012) reinforces the extent of Wright’s contemporary auteurism, e-auteurism and the influence this has on UK and US cultures. This study establishes the recurring filmmaking conventions that distinguish Wright as a contemporary auteur, including the application of sound design, genre hybridity, intertextuality and editing style; accounting not only for its effect on the transmediated film industry, but also the reception Wright receives amongst critics and fans. To conclude, this research indicates that Wright is categorised as a contemporary auteur who recontextualises traditional auteur criteria through popular culture and transmediation into UK and US media texts.
