Abstract
Inspired by the recent events of the Harvey Weinstein scandal, this study explores the barriers which females face, whilst working in the media industry, in contemporary society. Many barriers existed from centuries beforehand. The dissertation uses a large amount of qualitative research to suggest reasons why women face inequalities to male counterparts in the workplace. This is applied from secondary sources such as academic texts. Primary research involves an interview with a female providing a personal account of her career life in the media industry and her encounters with Harvey Weinstein. The quantitative data from official sources is used to support the research in this dissertation.
Through sociological and historical research, the Victorian model of gender roles in society was enforced through the public and private sphere and still exists to a certain extent. Despite feminist movements pushing for the acknowledgement of women being able to make worthwhile contributions to the economy, there is only a certain amount of progress.
