Dennis, Sarah (2020) See if the media can help victims of sexual harassment/ assault come forward, speak out and heal from their experience. (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

In this dissertation I look into whether the media can help victims of sexual assault/harassment come forward and speak out about what they have been through. I found this out by looking into a range of different campaigns and movements that rally against sexual assault and the effect they have had for victims but also in the fight for equality for women when the media was involved compared to if it wasn’t. The methodology that I use to look at this is socio-historical contextualisation, it allowed me to see the progression that the introduction of the media has had. I also use textual analysis to expand my research in the form of data, statistics and in particularly a range of case studies, such as that of Brock Turner and Harvey Weinstein. These two case studies specifically highlight ways in which the media has helped the victim and also the perpetrator, allowing me to have evidence of both sides of my argument. The case studies show that if the perpetrator involved in the incident is a white, high profile male then they are treated vastly differently to anyone else, which is where an increase in victim blaming/shaming is shown.
