Abstract

This research investigates the barriers to the implementation of Building Information Modelling in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction industry of Azerbaijan.
A critical literature review explores the construction sector of the country, its history and its development and identifies the most occurring barriers to the implementation of BIM.
Subsequently, the study examines the barriers to BIM adoption perceived by the members of the construction industry of the country, by means of a survey. The questionnaire comprised of 16 close-ended questions, of which one required a Likert scale ranking response. The questions were grouped based on personal information and BIM knowledge, education, interest, governmental requirements and perceived barriers, and was shared with an available sample of professionals in the AEC industry of Azerbaijan. Of 140 questionnaires sent, 43 were received over a period of time of 3 weeks with an overall response rate of 30.7%.
The data retrieved was primary data and its level of measurement, nominal and ordinal. Given the nature of the sample and the levels of measurement employed, inferences and deductions are based only on the sample. The results, calculated as the means of the total score of the responses, reveal that the highest scoring perceived barrier is the 'Lack of demand of BIM' (4.18), followed by the 'Lack of university and private training courses' (4.18) and by the 'Lack of adequate BIM skilled professionals in the industry' (3.76).
Given the importance of the construction industry in the GDP of Azerbaijan (8%) and the need to diversify the economy which heavily relies on the oil and gas industry, it is necessary to introduce innovation (BIM), supported and promoted by suitable regulations and standards. Additionally, changes have to be applied to the education system, with the introduction of BIM training courses that will boost BIM usage and implementation. Eventually, company in-house training needs to be encouraged to allow for knowledge sharing and continued personal development of the construction sector professionals
