Lawfull, Jordan (2020) An exploration of the role and impact of play for children with autism in both mainstream and special needs’ schools. (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

Over recent years, the topic of autism has consumed a great amount of interest due to its increase in prevalence. This dissertation aims to focus on the impacts of autism on children, and how play techniques and other strategies can be used to support them. The method used for this was a literature review, where a key finding was that the specific causes of autism are still not fully known or understood, this is an area which needs further research. Also, children with autism are shown to play in a different way to their peers, where a sensory pleasing atmosphere creates a more relaxing and anxiety-reducing environment. In recent years, the strategies used within special needs schools have been transferred into mainstream schools where it is possible, which is likely to provide more effective support for children with autism. The main conclusions drawn from this research were that all children are different and each individual child with autism has differing traits or characteristics. This means that support needs to be given on an individual basis, with no assumptions made. However, more research is needed in order to understand autism at a more in-depth level. This could be seen as a limitation within the research, as there are many unanswered questions as there are significant gaps within the literature.
