Almutairi, Shaheen Majed B. (2020) Beyond religion: a social movement analysis of the ISIS crisis. (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
Among many Muslim fundamentalist organizations operating in ME, ISIS has been considered the gravest threat to international peace and security due to its lethal actions, large number of its members, broad base of recruitment, control over significant territory, and huge financial sources. This dissertation asks, "What were the major causes of the rise of ISIS?" A reference to religion as a root cause of ISIS’ growth has deliberately been skipped and this research employs Social Movement Theory to understand the underlying causes for its creation, development, and survival. It focuses on the importance of structural crisis in Iraq after the US led invasion of 2001 to the birth of ISIS. It finally considers the significance of leadership to the movement and its growth.
