Elliot, Amy (2021) An exploration of social work practice with victims of Child Sexual Exploitation. (unpublished MSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
Child Sexual Exploitation 'CSE' is a complex form of child sexual abuse, involving a coercive power dynamic between the abuser and victim. CSE often involves an exchange of gifts in return for sexual activity. Research has shown that social workers working with victims of CSE face certain challenges; due to the victims often believing they are in a consensual relationship as opposed to an abusive one. This has led to social work practice with victims of CSE to be described as ‘patchy and inconsistent.’ Thus, victims are not receiving the support they need. This dissertation is a literature review that has critically appraised four articles that were published between the years 2016-2017. Thematic analysis was completed, which provided an insight into how social workers can work effectively with victims of CSE. This included how to build a trusting relationship and how to utilise the time spent with the victims. It also identifies challenges that social workers face, such as inadequate training and experience. This dissertation concludes with recommendations for practice informed by social work theory.
