Freemantle, Sharon (2021) A literature review examining the research question: “What constitutes good practice in social work with adults who self-neglect?”. (unpublished MSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

Prompted by an experience during a work placement, the researcher attempts to discover evidence towards the question of “What constitutes good practice when working with self-neglect in social work?” As simple as this first appears, this review demonstrates what a difficult area it is to navigate, due to the complexities of self-neglect.
This dissertation is a literature review using 5 research articles, which are critically appraised by the researcher. The review seeks to identify through the experiences of practitioners working with self-neglect, what practices have proved to be effective and what can hinder practice.
Many themes emerge through analysis of the research that are shared amongst the articles, this enabled the researcher to draw solid conclusions as to what value they have in answering the research question, as well as providing evidence for future recommendations for practice and study.
