Taylor, Emily (2021) Exploring the barriers to a successful placement and better outcomes for a looked after child/young person: a literature review. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
Looked after children are considered disadvantaged and vulnerable (Biehal, Ellison, Baker, & Sinclair, 2010; NSPCC, 2020). Furthermore, there is a preoccupation with poor outcomes instead of evaluating the care experience itself, focusing on the type of adults that emerge from the care system.
Many children experience placement breakdown for one reason or another. However, placement instability and failures can significantly impact a child's emotional well-being and mental health. Moreover, it may have a detrimental impact on the ability to form stable relationships, including those who want to help and protect them (Rahilly and Hendry, 2014 cited from NSPCC, 2020). Munro (2011) recognises that this area will benefit from a revised practice that will ultimately promote better outcomes for these children/young people. This study will look at existing research around placement instability and the reasons behind why they fail.
This study will use research that includes the voice of the children, foster carers, and social workers to enable a broad range of perspectives, therefore a more reliable, accountable piece of research.
