Alexis-Ebanks, Jordan Samuel (2021) UR4 rigged astronaut. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
This project involves the development of creating a 3D Apollo astronaut, rigged with bones, textured and rendered within Unreal Engine 4. Multiple softwares shall be used for its creation and process consisting of 3Ds Max, Zbrush, Substance Painter, and Unreal Engine 4. Research into accurate reference images of the suit’s materials, design and overall structure, along with realistic footage affecting the overall movement of the astronaut proving a more realistic perspective on the artifact. Research also led to reliable image sources being found and useful guides aiding with the creation process using the various softwares. Problems occurred at times in Zbrush, but mostly in the topology stage in 3Ds Max resulting in an incomplete character due to missing out on fundamental processes such as texturing, rigging and final implementation in Unreal Engine 4.Meeting with the client helped, providing feedback on their expected outcome, which enabled quality improvements making them more satisfied with the final result.
