Hermitage, Alessandra (2021) Translation of an extract from Anna Kaminsky’s Frauen in der DDR into English: Commentary on literary translation theory and translation strategy. (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

This research project includes the translation of an extract from Dr Anna Kaminsky’s book “Frauen in der DDR” from German to English. The translation commentary succeeds the translation, drawing on strategies identified in the translation theory while evaluating their success. The aim of this project is to discover the best method for translating genres of a specialised nature. Special care must be taken when translating CSIs and idioms so that they are understood by the target culture and capture the original meaning. In the case of this source text, East German terminology and lexical elements are numerous and their solutions will be explored in more detail. It is concluded that a combination of foreignisation and domestication is required in order for the full essence of the source text to be transferred into the target text. It can be hoped this project will aid other translators who wish to approach a similar genre, especially considering the translation of GDR genres is limited.
