Atkinson-Cox, Danika (2021) How are women represented in song lyrics in the 2020 Rap Music Charts?. (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
Despite a plethora of academic research on the influence of the language of rap music on popular culture and society, less research attention has been focused on the language of modern rap and its influence and representation of women, gender and sexuality. This study aims to investigate recurring themes regarding women and how they are constructed and portrayed in the 2020 Official Rap Music charts, and identifies the vocabularies, versions and relevant discourses that are invoked or crafted. A critical discourse analysis was applied to over 220 songs, and resulted in two themes: “Discrimination/Marginalisation/Objectification”, and “The Use of Stereotypes”. These themes contain messages regarding male and female characteristics that promote a certain manner for men and women to behave, advocating potentially unhealthy, outdated behaviours regarding both genders, which will be explored further in this study.
