May, Kirstyn Jayne (2021) FUTURITY: research project: AVT and commentary of “Porvenir”. (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

This project is an AVT (English subtitles) of an edited short Spanish docufiction mini-series, “Porvenir”, about climate change in Spain. The AVT aims to inform English speakers of the issues Spain faces due to climate change and raise awareness of its effects from a Spanish domestic perspective.

Around the world, Spain is known for its beautiful landscapes, pristine sandy beaches and sunny climate. Many a holiday has been had in Spain and many a memory made with nearly 84 million international tourists flocking to the country in 2019 (Statista, 2021). But what will happen when the majestic landscapes, dreamy beaches and glorious weather are no more? Do people know that Spain is ranked the 29th country most at risk from global warming? (Eckstein, D., Künzel, V. & Schäfer, L., 2021).

Through the viewpoint of acclaimed native Spanish researchers and scientists, this impactful mini docuseries reveals current environmental concerns in Spain. Using my knowledge of environmental issues along with translation skills and expertise acquired through my degree, I hope to help spread awareness about the challenges this renowned country is facing by subtitling this documentary in English. Therefore, making it available to a wider, international audience.

In turn, this AVT will explore, analyse, discuss, support and justify, with evidence and examples, the decisions made throughout the translation and subtitling process. In addition, explaining any challenges that arose and how they were dealt with.
