De Canha Garces, Nakita (2021) A translation and commentary of Pablo Arandas’ children’s novel ‘El Colegio Más Raro del Mundo' . (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

This Research Project consists of a 2000-word translation of Pablo Aranda’s Spanish children’s novel ‘El Colegio Más Raro del Mundo’ accompanied by an evaluative commentary that provides support for the main translation challenges identified. In this project, the reader can expect to learn about the application of functionalism in literary translation as well as the various translation procedures that were adopted to create a purpose-oriented entertaining target text that appeals to a young British target audience. The main translation issues include interpreting the TA’s knowledge, the difficulties in recreating the child narrator, wordplay in the characters names, the connotative meaning, and culturally specific items. This Research Project also reflects on the annual shortage of children’s literature translation publications in the UK, as well as the late introduction to books from other cultures and traditions in the British National Curriculum.
