Leadbetter, Paul Dominique (2021) The CFA Franc Zone: a neo-colonial construct?. (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
This research project examines the CFA Franc Zone, with a particular focus on the West African CFA Franc Zone, to assess to which extent the zone can be considered a neo-colonial construct. The subject will be approached thematically, looking at how the issue became significant and then focusing on the zone itself, showing how France still has a fair amount of influence over the West African zone. The overarching argument of the work will be that the West African CFA Franc zone exists for the benefit of France and African leaders loyal to France, whilst having very little benefit for the West African CFA zone states themselves and their people. It will be made evident that even today, France shows considerable interest in the zone despite outside appearances, and wishes to maintain some influence over the economic systems of the countries therein. This paper will thus reveal the neo-colonial nature of the West African CFA Zone.
