Evans, Ryan (2021) How does Twitch.tv and Streamers use gamification and parasocial relationships to monetise content. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

With the growing popularity of Twitch.tv (TTV) and user-generated content (UGC), the motivating factors of why viewers support this style of media which is freely available to consume needs a deeper understanding. This study aims to identify viewers attitudes to supporting this new media, and how gamification motivates viewers to continually support the streams they enjoy. It also aims to look at the level of parasocial relationships that viewers are experiencing towards their favourite streamers and its influence on how they support them. The results of this study have found viewers are adopting the gamified support methods provided by TTV, over other third-party services that are implemented by a streamer on an individual basis. It also found the majority of participating viewers do not perceive a feeling of parasocial relationship towards a streamer. And identifies a discrepancy between viewer attitudes to support and the actions they have taken by supporting.
