Urquhart, Andrew (2021) The addictive components of video games and the mechanics that contribute towards psychological addiction. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

This dissertation examines the addictive components of video games and the mechanics that contribute towards psychological addiction. Addiction is a broad term subjected to much scholarly debate; this is increased further when looking at the often disputed world of internet addiction. Video games in particular offer a fascinating study into the addiction, considering the developed addictive components, intentionally, and unintentionally included within gameplay. By developing an understanding of mechanics within the games themselves, the psychological implications of such leisure mediums form parallels with greater developed addictions such as gambling and substance-based addiction. By examining the games Escape from Tarkov and Rust, the addictive components will be explored in order to form a greater understanding of what makes video games addictive, which is heavily linked to the increasingly personable virtual world that the player can escape into.
