Rundle, Corrah Emma Marion (2021) An extended literature review: could mobile assisted language learning be used in English secondary schools in order to cause a potential upswing in GCSE modern foreign language examination entries?. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

This project will go in depth into whether language learning in English Secondary Schools should finally come in to the 21st century and be done using technologies such as Duolingo. This study was undertaken to understand exactly why numbers have fallen throughout the years and explain what I personally think should be done to rectify the continual fall in entries for language exams, and what I think could be done to expand the range of languages on offer, as well as find a way to meeting the ambitions of the Conservative Governments goals for GCSE Entries that relate to the English Baccalaureate.

Duolingo and the way it teaches such a vast range of languages could be exactly what GCSE Modern Foreign Languages needs to be saved from the possibility of falling into the abyss and potentially how it could revolutionise the teaching of languages from the ways it has been stuck in for so many years, and possibly encourage more students to take a language.
