Drennan, Lily Florence (2021) To what extent has Covid-19 affected the music industry in Portsmouth?. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

This study explores the direct effect Covid-19 has had on the music industry. Looking specifically at venues, musicians and the wider music industry in Portsmouth. Conducting interviews with industry experts gives the study insight into the problems they faced during the pandemic and what support was made available. The study aims to highlight the lack of guidance given to the music industry and difficulties faced by those trying to apply for funding. A questionnaire is used to gain an understanding of whether the general publics feelings towards the industry have changed because of the virus, as their attitude will have a big impact on how the industry reopens moving forward.

Using current articles, government resources and industry reports, the study gives reasoning as to why so many musicians and venues have struggled during the pandemic. The majority of research points to lack of support and guidance from the government. It also details what could be done going forward to support the music industry as lockdown eases
