Sharp, Benjamin (2021) How and why Pokémon are designed the way they are, investigating standard creature design principles, examining and replicating game freaks production pipeline, and analysing the way they create creatures not just as enemies, but as allies. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

The goal of this paper is to investigate the wider world of creature design, and to establish what facets need to be considered when designing creatures, especially when creatures are the biggest focus and selling point of the worlds largest and highest grossing individual media franchise(Talaviya, 2019), that being Pokémon. Once these ideas are explored, there will be a creation of 3 individual Pokémon by employing a rapid iteration methodology, created in a way as to accurately emulate the production pipeline of Game Freak (the creators of the Pokémon video games) in an attempt to demonstrate what points need to be considered when creating a Pokémon, ending with reference sheets and full 2d renders in the Pokémon style, for each distinct creature created
