Verrico, Richie (2021) Can they hear the difference?: a listening test to determine whether changes in loudspeaker enclosure volume are audible to a group of participants. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
The writer of this study is a member of FB Music and Media, a small sound company who in the summer of 2020 began building their own PA speakers. This research lead to a specific question; how important is enclosure volume? In this study an AB listening test was employed to answer this question as well as whether driver arrangement has a perceived audible difference. Ten participants were utilised to listen to five audio tracks of Piano, Clarinet, Acoustic Guitar, male voice and female voice and asked to answer on a scale of 1-10 how different they sounded between a Meyer Sound speaker and five other speakers. Three of which were built specifically for this study with a two-five configuration similar to the Meyer Sound speakers and this whole process is documented in Appendix C. Both the questionnaire and SPL graphs were assessed and the conclusion made that shrinking enclosure for spoken word is a viable option but increasing volume for extended bass response is a less desirable option compared to utilising a larger driver for flatter low frequency response.
