Stevenson, Thomas Riley (2021) An examination of contemporary music consumption habits and exploring subsequent social and economic impacts on the music industry. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

This study project investigates and explores why contemporary music streaming and consumption has greatly benefitted the music industry in recent years, and questions if it will continue its positive trends and impacts in the future. The study establishes key factors that define modern consumption habits and practises that appear in the culture of online streaming and compares different cultural aspects across different generations of consumption methods. A questionnaire has been conducted as primary research to gauge the views, opinions and statistics relating to music consumers of different age groups. The results are analysed and discussed with reference to existing literature and data relevant to the topic. The project also examines key technologies that might potentially shape the future of music consumption and debates whether these might revolutionise the culture of music consumption and ownership yet again.
