Thomas, Milo (2021) Are students satisfied with their accommodation experiences?: a case study exploration of how landlord to tenant relationships can be improved through using a user experience framework. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

Research has shown that students are commonly dissatisfied with their rented accommodation and communication experiences between their landlord/estate agents. Taking a combined approach, this project investigates potential solutions for improving these experiences through following an iterative, user-centred design process, involving the investigation and evaluation of findings from an online survey, interviews and user testing. Results discovered that the users would benefit from a service which allowed them to store their accommodation documentation in one centralised place with improved communication methods with their landlord/estate agent.
The project output involved the development of a Data Management Application, designed to improve student/landlord relationships, providing communication, documentation and issue management services to accommodate for the user needs and requirements detected in the research methodology.
The first section of the project discusses research context before explaining the importance of User Experience (UX) in relation to this project. Both project and personal Aims & Objectives are addressed, and finalised with a description of the project scope. Following this, a literature review investigates the themes of Data Management, UX Design approaches, competitors and student living rights. The project Methodology Management is addressed before the Discussion section breaks down project development and execution. Finally, a conclusion evaluates project findings, further research and a reflection on personal development.
