Grendaite, Viktorija (2021) The underground Techno music scene in Berlin: how did political and social aspects during the 90s impact the emergence of the underground dance music culture in Berlin and what is this culture’s relevance today?. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

The underground Techno scene in Berlin emerged since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and remained relevant to its audiences locally and globally for nearly three decades. The purpose of this dissertation is to analyse the impact of political and social events on the underground Techno scene in Berlin and how it retained its relevance despite the challenges such as city’s controversial urban and historic heritage and the audience’s shift towards the mainstream culture. Based on a review of existing literature and primary research via online surveys and interviews, this study compares Berlin to other emerging underground scenes in eastern European countries such as Georgia and Ukraine in an attempt to conclude whether political uncertainty and social inequality aids the development of the alternative subcultures such as the underground Techno scene as a means of youth movement
