Spearing, Rhianna Charis (2021) Does Chinese investment lead to poverty reduction through increased employment opportunities in the Small Island Developing States of the Caribbean?. (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

This project analyses the impact of Chinese investments on creating ‘quality employment’ in the Caribbean Small Island Developing States (SIDS). The main theme being employment as a driver of poverty reduction. This project uses ‘Critical Caribbean Development Thought’ as a lens in which to study investments from the People’s Republic of China. Within this theory, transparency and engagement with civil society are paramount in the development of the Caribbean region. The concluding remarks are that Chinese investment in the Caribbean does not necessarily lead to an increase in quality employment for Caribbean people and therefore does not reduce poverty through this medium. This project also suggests that investments from PRC enforce the Caribbean’s subordinate role in the global economy. This is due to Chinese investors consolidating a top-down approach with host governments and a lack of transparency with the public.
