Wright, Samantha (2021) How has the development of local Hong Kong identity contributed to the protests against the PRC intervention?. (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

This dissertation is designed to investigate how Hong Kong residents have responded to Chinese influences and how these reactions have affected their view on their own identity. This research will utilise secondary sources such as literature reviews and data collected from public surveys to provide a large and reliable database. The dissertation will firstly look at the historical background of Hong Kong, and its effects on identity formation, and secondly, at the relationship between Hong Kong and China after the handover in 1997 through presenting evidence by using Anderson’s and Hall’s identity theories which shed light on the change in identity recognition amongst Hong Kong people. Finally, I will also analyse the development of the local ‘Hong Konger’ identity which is an antithesis of Chinese national identity.
