Ahmed, Shafiuddin (2021) Divided after rule: the impact of British colonial indirect rule on the salience of ethnicity and ethnic conflict in an independent Nigeria. (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

Intrastate ethnic conflict has been one of the most common forms of conflict worldwide since the end of World War Two. The Federal Republic of Nigeria has experienced ethnic conflict at a higher rate than many other countries since its independence, resulting in some of the bloodiest confrontations involving postcolonial states. This paper will explore the effects that the system of administration applied by the British Empire in colonial-era Nigeria – known as indirect rule – had on the salience of ethnicity and the occurrence of ethnic conflict in Nigeria since independence. It will argue that indirect rule fundamentally changed the nature of ethnicity in the region and created an enduring propensity for ethnic violence.
