Hazelwood, Scottt James (2021) An assessment of the ramifications of Brexit upon the United Kingdom’s and European Unions’ intelligence agencies. (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
This study explores the ramifications of Brexit upon the United Kingdom’s and European Union’s intelligence agencies. The aims of this study were to highlight the previous approach these institutions took in challenging the international threat of terrorism and assessing the positive and negative impacts of Brexit upon this framework. The research method used for this study was an extensive literature review, used to assess the current discourse surrounding the area of study. This method utilised both primary and secondary sources to explore the current debate around the future security arrangements of these two institutions. A focus of terrorism was used to highlight one key area that is of concern to future arrangements. The research found that, Brexit will have a definitive impact against the former arrangements for ensuring national security. Brexit will have positive and negative impacts for both institutions, ultimately finding that the United Kingdom will find itself in a stronger position than the European Union in terms of countering terrorism following Brexit. This led to the conclusion that due to the impacts of Brexit, there must be future cooperation between the United Kingdom and the European Union in regard to security arrangements.
