Noble, James (2021) Major power interaction and competition in the present security environment: NATO and the US in the face of Sino-Russian aggression. (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

The geopolitical situation currently facing the world is an unprecedented one; several world powers arising simultaneously, who are geographically separate, yet must regularly interact. This work will analyse how these major powers interact and compete with one another, focusing on how NATO and the US act in the face of Sino-Russian aggression, and how this may change in the future. This paper will work within a realist lens, however, argues that there is a need for revision of this framework, given developments in the present security environment. This work will have a strong emphasis on the role of global power distribution and polarity, and how these structures can impact both the nature and severity of security threats faced by the actors discussed. This work argues that the means employed by both the US and its European NATO allies aimed at countering Sino-Russian aggression have been limited in their effectiveness and presents critiques and possible alternatives.
