Abstract

Disability and impairments are very common, with more than 1 in 10 people having some kind of impairment which changes how they interact with the world. This number is increased when discussing video games, as common situations affect the way players interact with their games. Even a noisy environment can make playing some games very difficult. This report looks at how the games industry is doing in terms of accessibility and find areas in which they can improve going forwards. The report will look at a comparative case study of Naughty Dog’s Last of Us games and a case study of Cyberpunk 2077. It will also cover recommendations on how to create accessible video games while using input from developers and gamers, in the form of a survey, on areas which are most used, the proportion of gamers with disabilities and key accessibility features, such as subtitles. Accessibility has improved throughout the years, as shown by the increase in accessibility awards given to games studios, but there are still very basic areas in which not even the biggest releases perform at an acceptable level. Due to this, several recommendations can be taken from the most desired accessibility settings within the survey
