Woodhead, James (2021) Manipulation and suspense: how are these techniques used effectively in horror films?. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

This project explores how an audience can be manipulated by a horror film through the use of techniques purposely executed by specific directors. This can be done through the use of suspense and psychological elements to a horror film. Each sub-genre of horror implements a different response and impact on the viewer; thus, effecting the emotion and nature of thought throughout a cinematic experience. The study uses film analysis and scholars’ interpretations as secondary research. However, due to the fast evolution of the horror film culture, the needs in order to feel satisfied after a viewing is at a constant development; making it more challenging to create an impactful horror film for a contemporary audience from a director’s standpoint. The use of an informal survey was created to receive a comprehension on audience perception and mentalities.
