Stasiak, Tomasz (2021) Multi-layer integrated supply chain delivery model for water industry. (unpublished MSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

Over the last two decades the water industry in the United Kingdom underwent revolution in terms of project delivery methodology. Challenges related to the digital revolution, requirement to reduce the cost of delivery and maintenance brought new ways of working into the market. This dissertation proposes new, more advanced methodology of project delivery for water companies that utilise the latest trends and advancements in digital technology. Based on limited literature related to this topic, overall construction industry analysis as well as other industries’ scrutiny, a new model of project delivery was proposed. At its core lies integrated supply chain, use of intelligent contracts based on blockchain technology and a fully operational digital twin being an end effect of each project. The proposed model was evaluated by a panel of industry experts through an online survey conducted with help from respected and independent industry body British Water. Results of this survey were analysed in order to determine suitability of the prosed model. While integrated supply chain and digital twin solutions were widely accepted proposals, intelligent contracts were recognised as something that the industry needs more time to feel comfortable with. It is worth highlighting the gap between skillset concentrated within both the clients and tier 1 suppliers (being most likely global corporations) compared to the lower tiers of supply chain. Knowledge transfer from bigger organisations was identified as a key factor to achieve a successful implementation of the proposal. It was also acknowledged that this proposal is only a guideline and would require further consideration to become operational especially in terms of law aspect and new contract type.
