Daniels, Greer (2021) A critical analysis of homework within primary schools. (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

This empirical dissertation is a critical exploration of homework within primary schools. The research involved a review of the literature on homework within primary schools over the last twenty years. The purpose of homework and its advantages and disadvantages were explored. A small-scale case study examined the perceptions of homework of one headteacher through a semi-structured interview. Focus group interviews took place with pupils aged five to eight from the same school. Five key themes emerged. Theme one discussed the headteachers’ view of homework being to develop a positive relationship between school and home. Its purpose being to engage and create a partnership with parents. Theme two explored the headteachers’ view of homework to provide opportunities for pupils to pursue their own interests. Theme three examined pupils’ perceptions of the purpose of homework as individual benefits, such as learning knowledge and skills, continuing their development, and being prepared for the future. Theme four explored pupil’s dislike of homework. Theme five discussed the complexity of researching children via an online platform. This small study revealed a view not discussed in the literature about the purpose of homework being for pupils to pursue their own interests. It offers a contribution to a gap in the literature regarding pupils’ perceptions of homework and contributes new knowledge into the field of research with children via an online platform.
