Abstract

Autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) has become a topic of discussion throughout society as more research goes into understanding the disorder. This dissertation will focus specifically on the inclusion of children with autistic spectrum disorder in mainstream education. Over recent years, the number of children being diagnosed with autism is steadily increasing which is why it is important that an extensive amount of research goes in to learning about the disorder and how it effects children and people across the globe. Whilst there are individual differences present in the condition, the general characteristics remain very similar. The aim of this research is to establish a definition of ASD and a background on the disorder. It then attempts to explain what is meant by inclusion and what it means for children with autism. Finally, it discusses strategies past and present that have been and are used to implement the inclusion of children with ASD in mainstream education. The method used to do this was a literature review and the dissertation concludes that there is no one way to completely define autism. It deduces that the idea of integrating children with ASD into mainstream education is seen as extremely beneficial for them and there is an ever-growing set of strategies in place to execute this successfully. That being said, there is a significant gap in the literature surrounding the inclusion of children with ASD in mainstream schools in the UK which could be seen as a limitation to this research.
