Abstract

This research was designed to question UK university students on gender stereotypes, norms and the way they are intertwined within the social media platform Instagram. Qualitative data will be obtained from 8 semi-structured interviews and then the transcripts will be analysed to extract themes in order to discover how these stereotypes have been formed from their socialisation online.
I argue that these stereotypes and norms have been routed in these students from a young age, as they have been brought up learning there are distinguished differences between men and women. These differences have then been influenced and further taught through social media sites like Instagram, where the stereotypes have strong holds over them meaning they would not conform against. However, they can see that there are stereotypes that are not necessarily true, but nevertheless they know people will be mocked if they go against this norm created by society.
