Wainwright, Lauren Rebecca (2021) Men and masculinity: an inquiry into how ‘toxic masculinity’ affects the stigma around men’s mental health and whether views are influenced by generation. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
This dissertation explores the link between toxic masculinity, the stigma around men seeking help and generation, whilst looking at the effects of each of these factors. Men’s mental health is becoming an increasingly more important and well-researched topic as awareness about suicide rates is becoming present. However, there is little research done about the three aforementioned factors, especially when looking at generation influences. This dissertation seeks to fulfil this gap in the research.
To do this, semi-structured interviews were conducted to collect data which then underwent thematic analysis. This produced findings that showed how society is changing to be more accepting about men wanting to seek help but only to a certain degree. It also revealed that whilst toxic masculine ideals had less of a grip on society, they still subconsciously affected people’s views and actions as well as showing that different generations can have the same views as people change their opinion to reflect society.
