Ferguson, Sian Stephanie (2021) The representation of race and masculinity in music artists. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

This purpose of this dissertation is to uncover how race and masculinity is represented in relation to music artists. By conducting a thematic analysis of qualitative data from Twitter, this analysis highlights how users on this social media platform discuss race and masculinity regarding the music artists selected. As well as this, a thematic analysis of the lyrics from a song released by each of the artists uncovers how the music artists represent themselves in terms of their race and masculinity. The music artists include two black artists, Stormzy and Dave, and one white artist, Aitch. This means comparisons are made between all three artists in terms of how present race and masculinity are in the discussions surrounding them.
Racism, whiteness, institutional racism and misogyny are the key themes found during analysis. Race and masculine stereotypes are key points in the discussions surrounding both black artists and when compared with the white artist, these points are much more present for the black artists than for the white artist. While users displayed whiteness in the discussions surrounding the black artists, the white artists white privilege was clear throughout. The lyrics analysis allows for a deeper understanding on how these artists assert their masculinity at the expense of women.
