whittingham, Amelia (2021) An exploration into the promotion of expressions of youth agency in an open access youth provision of 12-16-year-olds. (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

Agency is vital in today′s society. Youth can often feel marginalised and unable to find their own voice (Alldred et al., 2018). It is, therefore, important that youth workers can work with them to tackle this in a meaningful way. This study's general purpose was to explore how agentic practice is promoted within modern open access youth work. This was explored through semi-structured interviews focused on the centres and youth workers practice for 12-16-year-olds. This research draws on youth worker’s authentic experiences and difficulties working within the boundaries that modern youth work provides. The research established that through voluntary participation, youth are able to engage with opportunities that empower them to become agentic individuals. The dissertation highlighted how youth work is an agentic practice embedded in the boundaries of modern youth work.
