Milnes, Chloe (2021) An exploration of the differences in the support given to children with Autism Spectrum Disorder in both mainstream and SEND schools. (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
The number of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) within mainstream education has particularly risen within the last few years, with only 9.3% of all children with SEND attending Special schools due to the majority of these children now being educated within mainstream education (Department for Education, 2018) However, despite this, the debate continues as to whether children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) such as ASD should be educated in mainstream or special education settings. The purpose of this study was to explore the support given to children with Autism Spectrum Disorder in both mainstream and SEND settings. This was examined through semi structured interviews with practitioners from a variety of settings. The interviews focussed on behavioural support, inclusion and training, which formed the three key themes during the data analysis process. The research undertaken within this project has identified some of the barriers for achieving inclusive education and some of the key similarities and differences between both mainstream and SEND schools.
