Cole, Ellie (2022) A research study of offending behaviours and the impact of the quality of rehabilitation on young adult offenders and recidivism. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

This dissertation aimed to investigate the current services provided for young adult offenders and how this can impact their rehabilitation. As well as this, an aim was to identify patterns and similarities between the young adult offenders in order to understand why they reoffend, and how this can be prevented.
To complete the research semi-structured interviews were conducted, with participants from the United Kingdom and Malta, in order to allow for more in depth and a variety of answers. However, because of time constraints some answers were written and sent directly to the researcher. The sample consisted of 3 participants from the United Kingdom and 2 participants from Malta. As well as this, a literature review was included which focused on the current literature surrounding young adult offenders.
The research showed that a main similarity between young adult offenders was that they are male and have an inadequate education prior to offending. As well as this, it was highlighted how more funding is crucial to the services in order to recruit, train and provide better education for young adult offenders which all assists in the ability of the young adult offenders being able to desist from further crime.
