Walsh, Carla (2022) To reform or to abolish: a comparative review of the penal system in England & Wales. (unpublished BSc dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

This dissertation analyses how public attitudes towards the polarisation between the need to punish and the need to rehabilitate, determines whether the penal system in England and Wales, is likely to reform in becoming a more Nordic Britain. By investigating whether the penal system is embarking on a period of evolution, or whether it is likely to remain fixated in its traditional methods; this study can assess any signs of change, whereby England and Wales has a) been influenced, and B) attempted to reform its methods. To achieve this, this study will incorporate library-based research into a comparative literature review, using qualitative analytical landscape (Lester et al, 2020). The key findings that were found concluded that, on the condition that Britain invests in reforming their system, and that public attitudes veer toward the principle of compassion; there is every chance in the penal system in England and Wales becoming more Nordic.
