Bradley, Max (2022) The emergence of Political Twitter: a critical discourse analysis exploring the Conservative and Labour Parties’ discursive strategies during the 2019 General Election. (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
The aim of this research was to not only analyse Conservative and Labour party tweets in the final week leading to the 2019 General Election, but doing so by considering frameworks and approaches of Critical Discourse Analysis in the attempt to better understand the social practise of language. Salient figures in CDA and their approaches contributed to this deeper analysis of intended meaning, power, inequality and the manner in which the self and other are represented through the discourse found in the data set. Despite multiple perspectives on the ideology of CDA, it is accepted that CDA is not a uni-lateral approach, in which there is not a single codified framework for all to follow.
