Ganov, Petar Mitkov (2022) A socio-linguistic analysis of the language landscape in Luxembourg, with a particular emphasis on the government’s and the business world’s attitudes towards languages and multilingualism. (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

The linguistic landscape in Luxembourg is complex and is undergoing significant changes. This research project aims to investigate the thesis that French and English are going to increase their prevalence in the country, while the usage of German and Luxembourgish would decline. In order to test this hypothesis, 8 interviews were conducted with representatives of educational, governmental and business institutions. The collected data was put into context of the information presented in secondary material.
Overall, the primary research suggests that English and French are likely to further increase in their importance. On the other hand, the conclusion is reached that the decline experienced by the German language is likely to continue. The project also concludes that Luxembourgish will continue to stay relevant, due to its popularity amongst the local population as well as based on the partially controversial measures taken by the government to further boost its use amongst the growing migrant community.
