Abstract
As human beings, we are accustomed to visual culture due to its ubiquitous involvement in our day to day lives. Even before the contemporary age of media and mass communication humans have always used some fom1 of visual imagery such as cave paintings, sculptures, aesthetic paintings, symbols etc. to transmit and express information or ideas to other individuals. However, after the dramatic development of technology and science in the twentieth century this consumption and use of visuals to communicate information with one another intensified even further especially through the medium of film and video cameras, as well as television and cinema. This dissertation seeks to find out how exactly it is able to do this, however with the extensive range of studies now developed on the interdisciplinary topic that is visual culture this dissertation will specifically focus on the function of photojournalism, one of the earliest forms of visual communication and also a significant contributor in communicating conflict issues throughout the twentieth century. It will address key conflict photojournalism examples from the twentieth century that are still eminent today and critically analyse its effectiveness accompanied through the interpretation of existing theoretical discourse around photojournalism and visuals as well as psychological theories. By doing so this dissertation aims to reject the common misconception that photojournalism is just an effortless duplication of real life and recognizes that it is actually an intricate concept that requires many factors in order to effectively communicate conflict issues to the vie wer as which can then be translated to other current affair issues within news reporting as well.
