Cannon, Carys (2021) Playing with Fire: the effect of social media on adolescents. (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between social media and today’s youth, paying particular attention to the influence of the two most used sites, Facebook and Instagram. Social media is a significant part of adolescent’s lives. Young people are heavily reliant on their phones and are becoming increasingly engrossed in a virtual world. My dissertation will discuss how social media is an environment where appearance is the be-all and end-all; a place where self-esteem and confidence can suffer, while also noting, as technology continues to advance, the amount of time spent online by young people is steadily increasing, enhancing issues related to addiction and obsession. Social media can be a hindrance and a distraction, detrimentally effecting academic performances and young people’s ability to socialise and converse in real life situations. The findings in this study help me to conclude that while social media does have its benefits, in some instances, it can be a harmful vice. Ultimately, the result is determined by the way in which the user interacts with social media.
