Okezie, Joel Chukwuemeka (2022) The influence of leadership styles and communication competence on employee productivity: a case of Chuwell Prints Nigeria Limited. (unpublished MA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

This research examines the influence of leadership style and communication competence on employee productivity using Chuwell Prints Nigeria as a case study. Differing leadership and communication methods produce contrasting effects on employees. To maintain a competitive lead, the print sector continually has to meet customer demand of standard quality of their products and services and at the exact time decrease cost and lead times. To drive this requires a good leadership style, and effective communication competence is required.
To achieve the desired result, the study utilised the qualitative research method, including pragmatism research, exploratory research, and non-probability sampling. A semi-structured interview was conducted for seven employees at Chuwell prints. One employee from the top management, four in the middle management and two junior staff. The results from the interview were analysed using thematic analysis.
The findings reveal that though managers at Chuwell Print exhibit all types of leadership styles, the most dominant leadership style was that of the toxic leadership. Also, there is a linear relationship between leadership style and communication competence on employee productivity. There is a need for management to re-evaluate or possibly re-train its leaders on their leadership style at Chuwell print. The need for extensive research on other factors such as job performance and absenteeism will help management be more strategic in the achievement of its organisational goal.
