Cohen, Jacob (2021) China’s insecurity:
the securitisation of Xinjiang and the treatment of the Uyghur Muslims. (unpublished MA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
Abstract
This dissertation will attempt to answer the question of why, how and to what extent the Chinese securitisation of the XUAR and the Uyghurs has been successful. It will apply the framework of Securitisation Theory, first conceptualised by the Copenhagen School, to the case study of the Uyghurs in Xinjiang. It will examine the process through which the CCP has securitised the issue of the Uyghurs in Xinjiang through the analyses of numerous speech acts and other acts of securitisation. It will chart the process of securitisation in the XUAR from the establishment of the SCO and the beginnings of the GWoT through to announcement of the BRI and up to the modern day. This has been a nuanced process through which the CCP has attempted to securitise the Uyghurs as underdeveloped, extremist and holding views of separatism to both a domestic Chinese audience and the wider international community. It will also discuss the implications of successful securitisation for the Uyghurs, including the ‘re-education’ camps that are aimed at the eradication of Uyghur identity.
