Robinson, Matt (2021) States’ claims to territories in the Artic and Antarctic regions of Earth may provide influential lessons for human expansion into Outer Space. (unpublished MA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

This dissertation asks the question: What can historical territorial claims over the Arctic and Antarctic regions of Earth tell us about human expansion into terrestrial territory? It aims to answer this question through a thorough inspection of the literature surrounding this topic, a detailed examination of the role states will play in the process of human expansion into space, and analysis of the role that private corporations will play in the process of human expansion into space. This dissertation argues that the role of the state in human expansion into space will follow a blueprint of sorts exposed by the historical treatment and experience of the Arctic and Antarctic. However, the role of private corporations will follow a different path, and potentially one of their own making. In coming to these conclusions, this dissertation investigates an array of sources, from government materials to international treaties to books and journal articles, in order to then present original arguments.
