Johanson, Kemper (2022) Methods of instructing summarization of extensive reading material. (unpublished MA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth

Abstract

Summaries are a useful means for students to practice writing while doing Extensive Reading (ER). This
action research looks at three methods for instructing summarization: (1) story grammar, (2) reading
response journals (RRJ), (3) paraphrasing. Story grammar introduces students to the common structure of
the narrative genre in order to help the students select necessary information for a summary, RRJ provides
a means for students to practice responding to reading materials, and paraphrasing informs students about
appropriate textual borrowing practices and how to construct original sentences. The students were
assessed according to individual criteria based on the treatment and an overall holistic score of the
summary produced. The students’ opinions were also collected before and after each treatment. All
treatments received positively by the students, however only the story grammar approach and
paraphrasing correlated with an increase in the holistic scores on the students’ summaries.
